Reflection #1: Chapter 1-Sampling "the New" in New Literacies

I selected this image because it gives a visual to the "new" literacies we are exposed to through literacy daily.

This chapter discusses the idea of "new" literacies based on various studies by individuals.  It looks the sociocultural approach to literacy as well as the sociocultural definition of "literacies".  What is "new", the "technical stuff"and "ethos stuff".  Along with the comparison of the two different mindsets of these literacies and a look at Web 1.0 and Web 2.0.

We are multi-taskers.  We maximize our time to get more things done-like the example given in this chapter about the lady getting ready to board the plane.  New literacies are more "participatory", "collaborative", and "distributed".  New technologies enable and enhance the ideas such as these.

This chapter tells me that I should be open in how I teach my students.  As times change, my students need to be exposed to these changes and opportunities.

I believe parts of this chapter could be applied to my content area.  The use of technology period with literacy will be beneficial to my students.  The more exposure they have, the more prepared they will be for further advances in "new" literacies.
