Reflection #5: Chapter 5-Video Games

I chose this image because this was the first video game I ever played.  I was so excited when I got a Nintendo game system for Christmas.  When kids play video games, it takes them out of reality into a different world for a bit.  But I do think they can become addicted and obsessed with gaming.

This chapter discusses how good video games create a "projective stance" (double-sided stance towards the world-virtual or real) of how humans see the world.  What is the relationship between video games and real life?  The claims about playing video games were interesting to me.  1) In a video game, players inhabit the goals of a virtual character in a virtual world.  The virtual world aligned with goals.  2) In a video game, a virtual character participates in goals of the real world.  And for them to form certain types of goals and not others.  In the classroom , we need to be sure that learners have lived and acted in multiple worlds based on different doctrines, be sure they compare and contrast and think about the relationships between doctrines, and they will make smart choices about to how to believe and act.  Doctrines are a set of beliefs.  Video games may tell us about what learning might look like in the future.  As we advance in technology, so will education.

  1. I have to admit that when I first began reading this chapter, I didn't know how it was going to connect with education. But as you said, we can compare the goals of the characters in the video game to goals in real life. We can learn from them and transfer that learning into today's classroom. Education has changed so much. Video games have come so far, I can only imagine what they both will look like in the future!

  2. Even though I may not totally agree with using video games as a connection to learning, I do agree that this is what we are going to experience in the future. Our world, even to us teachers, is a virtual world. What would we do without the technology and resources that we have at our hands today? We use many types of technological interaction when teaching our students. It is just the eay the world is now.

  3. I will have to admit that I enjoy my kids' Wii Just Dance and the Snow Ski game. In the winter when we can't get outside we play Rock Band... makes me feel like we are the Brady bunch! It brings out competition and maybe some arguing, all is part of life. Most of all, it's quality time together, something is hard to do when they get older. My son likes the baseball and football games. After getting his baseball game he wanted to check out books about famous baseball players. I don't care for the Call of Duty games. I think as parents we really have to monitor the quality and amount of time kids spent on video games. Video games should not be used as a babysitter.
