Text Set Collection #2 Honeybees

Honeybees Text Set

I chose this text set because my dad is a beekeeper and sells honey that he extracts from his honeybees.  I also believe my students during summer reading program would enjoy learning about honeybees.

Books

The Honeybee and the Robber
by Eric Carle, Eric Carle

Follow an adventurous honeybee as she goes about her busy day, sipping nectar from flowers, avoiding hungry birds and playing with butterflies. But when a robber bear comes looking for honey, all the bees must rush out to defend their home. This classic Eric Carle story is brought to life by movable pull-tabs that children can use to animate the action, as well as a beautiful pop-up butterfly.

The Honey Bee Man
by Lela Nargi, Kyrsten Brooker (Illustrator)
Age: 4-8 years

Every morning, Fred climbs three flights of stairs—up to his rooftop in Brooklyn, New York—and greets the members of his enormous family.  His honeybee workers are busy—they tend the hive, feed babies, and make wax rooms. They also forage in flowers abloom across Brooklyn... so that, one day, Fred can make his famous honey, something the entire neighborhood looks forward to tasting. The story offers an inside look at the life of an endearing beekeeper and the honey-making process.

The Bee Movie (2007) produced by DreamWorks Animation written by Jerry Seinfeld.  This cute movie is about a bee that wants a career choice.  He discovers humans actually eat honey, and subsequently decides to sue them.  The movie really shows how important bees are in the world, without them, everything suffers.

A Very Cool Place to Visit and Learn                              about Bees

Honey Harvest at the Creative Discovery Museum (Chattanooga, Tennessee)

This annual event always gets us buzzing with activity! Honey Harvest is a museum wide celebration for some of the world's hardest workers: the Honey Bee. Visitors will have the opportunity to make their own honey lip balm, beeswax candles and honey soap to take home. Tasting different kinds of honey, participating in honey extraction and meeting beekeepers from the Tennessee Valley Beekeeper Association are highlights as well.
