Jellyfish
I chose this text set because I use Jellyfish as one of the themes I use during the summer reading program I teach. Jellyfish are such unique creatures and I want my students to learn more about them.

Books
by Carol K. Lindeen
Ages: 4-8
Text
and photographs introduce jellyfish, their physical characteristics including
their soft, bell-shaped body and tentacles, and describes their behavior such
as their stinging abilities and eating habits. I chose this book because it gives the students of visual of real life jellyfish and can compare that to fictional books about jellyfish.
Children's Books About the Ocean: Jellyfish
by Julie Pearson
Ages: 8 and up
Full of interesting information about jellyfish for children interested in ocean life, the book uses 30 beautiful color pictures to show in amazing detail the intricate features of these stunning yet often dangerous creatures. The text is educational and written for children aged 8 and up. Younger children would also love the pictures and would benefit from sharing the book with a parent reading to them.
Designed to bring the world of jellyfish to life
for children of all ages, on Kindle, iPad, PC's and many tablet devices.
Peanut Butter and Jellyfish
by Jarrett J. Krosoczka
Ages: 3-7
Peanut Butter and Jellyfish are best of
friends and swim up, down, around, and through their ocean home. Crabby is
their neighbor. He is not their best friend. But when Crabby gets in trouble, will Peanut
Butter and Jellyfish come to the rescue?
You bet they will! This is a funny and touching story of
friendships old and new, and about being brave enough to apologize. I chose this book because I could discuss character traits of these characters along with characteristics of jellyfish.
Websites (Activities, Games, Videos, Etc.)
Handprint Jellyfish Craft
http://littlewondersdays.blogspot.com/2011/06/handprint-jellyfish-start.html
Ages: Young preschool and up
I chose this website because it incorporates books (Hide and Seek Under the Sea-Board Book and A Swim through the Sea by Kristin Joy Pratt-Serafini) along with the handprint jellyfish craft shown on the left. I think this activity would be fun for any age with an age appropriate book to lead into the craft activity.
Jellyfish Tunnel Book
http://deceptivelyeducational.blogspot.com/2011/06/jellyfish-tunnel-book.html
Ages: K-2
A great way to get students writing. On each page they write a fact from the stories that were read to them. A fun way to retell ideas they have learned from the story and also illustrate these ideas.
Rhyming Word Jellyfish
Would
be great to make a bulletin board with different colored jellyfish. Great
way to reinforce the word study of word families. My students would
definitely enjoy doing this activity and it being hands on makes the concept
more visual and they develop a deeper understanding of these word families.
Ages: PreK and K
Paper Bowl
Jellyfish
Ages: PreK and
up
No lesson on oceans is complete without
learning about the different kinds of animals that live underwater. Use
this fun art lesson plan to get your students interested
in jellyfish, a fascinating inhabitant of the sea. With nothing more than
a paper bowl and crepe paper, you can have adorable jellyfish swimming around
your classroom.
Stunning Jellyfish Video
No brains, no heart, and no blood, jellyfish have existed for 650 million years. This video is a great way to see jellyfish in action and real life.

Jellyfish Games and Videos
Kids are
interested in the nature around them.
With animal games and nature games kids are able to gain knowledge while
having fun playing with wild animals and exploring nature. I like this website because it includes games and puzzles
that can be used following a lesson about jellyfish and the vocabulary
taught. Practicing with games about
jellyfish is helpful to students by reinforcing the material. Another great
benefit to these games is the increase in spelling, reading, and retention
skills.
Jellyfish Game-Prefix, base, and suffix
Students have to put in the correct prefix, base, and suffix to create a page filled with colorful jelly fish. A great way to introduce prefixes and suffixes in kindergarten. I chose this page because I have to teach this concept in my content area.
Age: K and up (with the help of the teacher in lower grades)

What a fun text set!! The books and websites you chose would certainly engage the primary students! I especially liked the writing book they make. Such an authentic reason to write! Great job, Shannon!
ReplyDeleteI have always loved jellyfish! I still pick up the clear ones when I'm at the beach. I think this is a great text set for the pre-K and lower elementary level. I especially like the rhyming word and prefix/suffix activities, because it integrates the concept of jellyfish with language skills. And I'm sure the paper bowl jellyfish would look really cute hanging from the classroom ceiling! :)
