Text Set Collection #3 Caterpillar to Butterfly

Caterpillar to Butterfly

I chose this text set because on of my favorite books is The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.  I think the life cycle from caterpillar to butterfly is amazing.  My students love watching this cycle take place in our own classroom through a live butterfly garden.

Live butterfly kits for your classroom.  I have used this in my own classroom and my students loved it.  Great way to give students an up close and personal experience of the life cycle of a caterpillar.  Also includes other activities to purchase related to butterflies.
Ages: PreK-1

An educational video that shows the life cycle of a caterpillar from larva to chrysalis (cocoon) to butterfly.  The video is presented by two young boys.  I believe this is a great video to introduce caterpillars because it shows students the stages of a caterpillars life.

Spring Activity Song for Children-"Hungry Caterpillar" with lyrics
I am all about using songs to reinforce something I am teaching.  This is a cute song and I could bring out the onomatopoeias in the song like chomp and pop.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar
by Eric Carle
Ages: 1-6
A very hungry caterpillar literally eats his way through pages of the book.  A great way to teach students sequencing in stories.

From Caterpillar to Butterfly
by Deborah Heiligmam
Ages: 4-8
This is a great story to read while raising butterflies (butterflies, caterpillars, life cycle, symmetry)
From the time a caterpillar first hatches, it eats so fast that its skin can't keep up. It sheds its skin several times as it grows bigger and bigger. Eventually it forms a chrysalis and one day splits open and a beautiful butterfly emerges.  A magical metamorphosis!

Charlie the Caterpillar
By Dom Deluise
 Ages: 3-8
As Charlie the Caterpillar meets one group of animals after another playing together and having fun, he asks if he can join in. But each time he's told no because he's ugly. As winter comes,  Charlie spins himself a cocoon. When spring arrives, the cocoon opens and out comes Charlie, a beautiful butterfly. Everyone wants him to be part of their group. But Charlie puts these fair-weather friends properly in their place in this heartwarming story about the meaning of true friendship.

Beginning-Middle-End Activity for Charlie the Caterpillar

Caterpillar Ordering and Sequence
An interactive ordering and sequencing numbers game.  This math game has different levels, which can be matched to a child's ability level.  The drag and drop activities help children to order numbers, beginning at a basic level and progressing to more challenging exercises ordering decimal and negative numbers. The sequencing activities help children to recognize number sequences and reinforce their knowledge of multiples.  I believe this would be a great math activity for varying ages.  Many students struggle with ordering and sequencing.
Ages: 5-11

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Activities
Activities include a snack as an introduction to the book, measurement activity, and a sight word game to reinforce words from the book.  I believe this great way to hook students into the book and practice their sight
words in a tactile way.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Retelling Ziploc Activity
I like this activity because students have trouble retelling a story sometimes, which helps with comprehension, and this activity reinforces this skill.
Ages: PreK-1

Dr. Jean Caterpillar/Butterfly Songs/Activities
Ages: PreK-1
Includes songs with hand motions and a take home booklet for each song.  And a life cycle project to go along with the songs.  I am a big fan of Dr. Jean because I believe students learn through music and hands on activities.

Butterfly Life Cycle Games
Very interactive as students help complete a butterflies life cycle to see it reproduce and multiply.
Ages: PreK-1

Students can learn about the different stages of the butterfly life cycle in an animated lesson and simple activities to help them recall what they have learned.
Ages: K-1

  1. This is an awesome text set! I love how many resources you have given us and the variety in the types of resources. I have seen somethings for butterfly life cycle activities in Pinterest, but it is important to have the texts to back up the activities too.
